Lowick Community Orchard is a new orchard at Hunting Hall Farm, east of Lowick in North Northumberland. In April 2011 52 local people, from the ages of 2 to 80, worked together to plant 82 heritage fruit trees. In the autumn more trees were added and the orchard now has 112 trees of 68 different varieties. Each tree has been sponsored by a member of the public and some wonderful heritage fruits with interesting histories have been chosen for the orchard.
Tom and Karen Burn of Hunting Hall farm hope to work with the community to create an orchard for Lowick village that can be enjoyed by future generations. A grant from Natural England and the support of many people have made this project possible. Hard paths winding through the trees and an area for car parking have been constructed, so that the orchard is accessible to all. We hope it will become a lovely area for the village, with seats and picnic benches next to the paths to help visitors relax and enjoy the fruit trees (though it may be some time before the trees bear fruit!).
